EV Charger Placement: Garage, Driveway, or Exterior : What Works for Maine Winters

Thinking about installing an EV charger at home but unsure where it should go? You are not alone. Southern Maine homeowners often compare three options: inside the garage, on an exterior wall, or on a driveway-mounted pedestal.

The short answer is this: the best location depends on where you park, how far the charger is from your electrical panel, and how well the equipment will be protected from snow and ice.

For many homes, a hardwired Level 2 charger mounted on an exterior garage wall is the most convenient choice. But a garage installation or driveway pedestal may make more sense for other layouts.

This guide will help you choose the right location for your home and understand what is involved with EV chargers in Portland, Maine, and the surrounding Portland-Saco area.

Option 1: Installing the charger inside the garage

A garage wall is often the simplest location if your EV will be parked indoors most of the time.

The charger and cable will have better protection from:

  • Snow and freezing rain

  • Wind-driven moisture

  • Ice buildup

  • Road salt and dirt

  • Extreme temperature swings

The garage can also make it easier to keep the charging handle clean and dry. That is helpful during a Maine winter when even a short trip outside can mean dealing with snowbanks and icy surfaces.

Option 2: Mounting the charger on an exterior wall

For many Southern Maine homes, an exterior garage wall offers the best balance of convenience, cost, and winter protection.

This setup works especially well when:

  • The driveway is directly beside or in front of the garage

  • The electrical panel is located in the garage or nearby

  • The charger can be mounted close to the usual parking spot

  • There is an eave or other shelter above the installation area

Mounting the charger under an eave helps reduce direct exposure to snow and rain. A leeward wall, or a wall protected from the strongest prevailing winds, may also reduce ice buildup.

The charger should be rated for outdoor use. Depending on the product and installation location, your electrician may recommend an outdoor enclosure rating such as NEMA 3R or NEMA 4. Always follow the charger manufacturer’s installation requirements.

Avoid roof drip lines

A charger may be weather-resistant, but that does not mean it should sit directly below a roof edge where water drips continuously. In winter, repeated dripping can freeze around the charger, connector, or the ground below it.

When choosing an exterior wall, avoid:

  • Roof valleys

  • Gutter discharge points

  • Areas where snow slides off the roof

  • Locations that become buried by plowed snow

  • Narrow areas where the cable could block a walkway

Option 3: Using a driveway-mounted pedestal

A pedestal can be a good option when there is no suitable exterior wall near the parking area.

  • The garage is set far back from the driveway

  • Several parking spaces need access to one charger

  • The vehicle is usually parked beside the house rather than near a wall

  • A wall-mounted charger would require an excessively long cable

A pedestal gives you more flexibility to place the charger where the vehicle actually sits. That can make plugging in easier and help prevent the cable from stretching across a walkway or driveway.

The tradeoff is a more involved installation. A pedestal commonly requires:

  • A concrete footing or approved mounting base

  • Underground conduit from the electrical source

  • Trenching through soil, landscaping, or pavement

  • Protection from vehicles and snowplows

  • Careful planning for snow removal

Wheel stops or bollards may help protect the pedestal from a plow blade or vehicle impact. The pedestal should also be placed where it will not become surrounded by a large snowbank.

Think carefully about cord length

Cord length is one of the most important placement details. A charger that is too far from the vehicle can become frustrating to use, especially when the driveway is covered in snow.

Many residential Level 2 chargers use cables in the range of 18 to 25 feet. The right length depends on:

  • The location of the vehicle’s charging port

  • Whether you park nose-in or back-in

  • The width of the garage or driveway

  • The charger’s mounting location

  • Whether more than one vehicle may use the charger

Before installation, park your vehicle where you usually will and measure the distance from the proposed charger location to the charging port. Allow some extra reach, but avoid choosing an unnecessarily long cable.

A cable that is too short will not reach comfortably. A cable that is much too long may lie across the ground, collect snow, or create a tripping hazard.

As a general comfort guideline, many wall-mounted chargers are positioned around 36 to 48 inches above the parking surface. Your electrician will confirm the final height based on the charger instructions, local requirements, and the surrounding space.

Hardwired or plug-in: Which is better outside?

Both hardwired and plug-in Level 2 chargers are available, but they are not equally convenient for every Maine installation.

Hardwired chargers

A hardwired charger is connected directly to a dedicated circuit. This is often the preferred option for exterior installations because there is no exposed plug connection at the charger.

  • An outdoor-rated box

  • An extra-duty, weatherproof cover

  • A cover that remains closed while the charger is plugged in

  • Proper placement away from standing water and snow accumulation

What should you expect during winter charging?

Cold weather does not prevent an EV from charging, but it can affect charging performance and driving range. Your vehicle may use some energy to warm the battery before or during charging.

To make winter charging easier:

  1. Charge overnight when possible. This gives the vehicle plenty of time to reach the desired charge level.

  2. Precondition the vehicle while it is still plugged in. Many EVs allow you to warm the cabin and battery before leaving.

  3. Keep the connector off the ground. Use the charger holster and avoid placing the handle in snow.

  4. Clear snow around the charging inlet. Brush away loose snow before connecting.

  5. Keep the charger out of the plow path. Do not place the unit where it will be buried or struck.

  6. Never use an extension cord. A properly installed charger should reach the vehicle without one.

  7. Do not force a frozen connector. Allow ice to melt naturally or follow the vehicle and charger manufacturer’s instructions.
