Step 2: Electrical Rough-In
The rough-in is the stage where the electrical system is installed inside the framed structure before insulation and drywall are added.

Rough-In Coordination Matters
Electrical work must be coordinated with plumbing, heating, ventilation, insulation, framing, and cabinetry. A box placed too close to plumbing or a duct can create problems later.

How the 2026 Maine Electrical Code Affects New Homes

Expanded GFCI Planning
Maine’s 2026 rules include GFCI protection requirements for many receptacles and outdoor outlets. The state amendment addresses outdoor outlets at dwellings supplied by certain single-phase circuits, including equipment in garages, accessory buildings, and boathouses.
There is also a temporary exception for listed HVAC equipment. The Maine Electricians’ Examining Board states that this exception expires on September 1, 2026. That means outdoor HVAC equipment, including many mini-split systems, may need additional GFCI planning depending on the equipment and circuit.

EV Charging
If you plan to install an EV charger, tell your builder and electrician before rough-in begins. A Level 2 charger may require a dedicated 240-volt circuit, additional panel capacity, and a load calculation.
The 2026 NEC also includes requirements for receptacles used with certain plug-in EV charging equipment. Planning the garage or outdoor charging location early allows the electrical team to install the right wiring and equipment.

Step 4: Trim-Out After the Walls Are Finished
After insulation, drywall, painting, flooring, and cabinetry are complete, the electrical project moves into the trim-out stage.
Trim-out is when the visible electrical components are installed, including:

Recessed lighting trims
Ceiling fans
