Fall Electrical Safety Checklist for Southern Maine Homes: 8 Things to Do Before Winter
Fall is the perfect time to prepare your home for Southern Maine’s cold, wet, and sometimes unpredictable winter weather. A few simple electrical checks now can help you avoid tripped breakers, unsafe outlets, heating problems, and power disruptions later.

The short answer is yes: many important checks can be handled by a homeowner. However, anything involving damaged wiring, a service panel, generator connections, or new electrical equipment should be left to qualified professionals.
1. Inspect outdoor outlets and weatherproof covers
Outdoor electrical outlets face extra wear during the fall and winter. Moisture, leaves, salt air, freezing temperatures, and snow can all affect their condition.
Walk around your home and inspect outlets near:
Porches and decks
Garages and sheds
Driveways and walkways
Outdoor lighting

Keep leaves, mulch, and other debris away from electrical outlets and outdoor equipment. Never use an indoor-rated extension cord outside. Outdoor cords should be clearly marked for outdoor use and should not have frayed insulation or exposed wires.

2. Test every GFCI outlet
Ground-fault circuit interrupters, or GFCIs, are designed to help protect you from electrical shock. They are commonly installed in areas where electricity and water may come together, including kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, laundry areas, and outdoor locations.
Testing them is simple:
Plug in a small lamp or outlet tester.
Press the TEST button.
Confirm that power turns off.
Press the RESET button.
Confirm that power returns.
If the outlet does not shut off when tested, or if it will not reset, stop using it and contact an electrician. A GFCI can fail without obvious signs, so regular testing is important.

3. Get your generator ready before the first storm
A generator is only helpful if it starts safely when you need it. Test your generator before the first major wind, snow, or ice event.
For a portable generator, check:
Oil level and maintenance schedule
Spark plug condition
Air filter
Fuel freshness
Fuel stabilizer, if appropriate
Outdoor-rated extension cords
Built-in GFCI protection
Starting and operating instructions
Run the generator for a short test period and confirm that it operates smoothly. Keep fuel stored safely and according to local requirements.
Most importantly, never operate a portable generator inside your home, basement, garage, or another enclosed area. Generators produce carbon monoxide, which can build up quickly and become deadly. Keep the generator outdoors and away from doors, windows, and vents. Test your carbon monoxide detectors as well.
Never connect a generator directly to household wiring unless a properly installed transfer switch is in place. Backfeeding can energize utility lines and seriously injure utility workers or your neighbors.

4. Schedule an electrical panel inspection
Winter often increases the electrical load in a home. Space heaters, holiday lights, kitchen appliances, sump pumps, heat pumps, and other equipment may run at the same time.
Before the season begins, look at your electrical panel from the outside. Do not remove the cover or attempt repairs yourself. Instead, watch for warning signs such as:
Frequent breaker trips
Buzzing or crackling sounds
A hot panel cover
Rust or corrosion
Burn marks or discoloration
Breakers that will not reset
Missing or unclear circuit labels

5. Prepare your mini-split for winter operation

6. Add or review surge protection

For safe operation:
Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet.
Never use an extension cord or power strip.
Keep at least three feet between the heater and anything that can burn.
Place it on a level, stable surface.
Keep it away from rugs, curtains, bedding, and foot traffic.
Turn it off when leaving the room or going to sleep.
Also inspect cords for holiday lights, electric blankets, tools, and outdoor equipment. Replace damaged cords rather than repairing them with tape.
Avoid running cords under rugs, through doorways, or in locations where they can be pinched. If you regularly rely on extension cords in one area, consider having a permanent receptacle installed by a qualified electrician.
8. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
Fall is a good time to test every smoke and carbon monoxide detector in your home. Replace batteries as needed and follow the manufacturer’s replacement schedule for the devices themselves.
You should have carbon monoxide protection near sleeping areas and on each level of your home, particularly if you use:
A fireplace or wood stove
Oil or gas heating equipment
A standby or portable generator
An attached garage
Other fuel-burning appliances
Never ignore a carbon monoxide alarm. Leave the home and contact emergency services if the alarm sounds.
