6 min read

Thinking about installing a mini-split or Level 2 EV charger in 2026? The short answer is yes: Efficiency Maine rebates can help lower the cost of both upgrades.

For qualifying whole-home heat pump projects, Efficiency Maine is offering an additional $500 bonus per housing unit during the 2026 incentive period. Eligible EV charger customers can receive up to $400 total through an instant discount and setup bonus.

These Maine rebates can make your home more comfortable, efficient, and ready for the future. In this guide, we explain how the programs work, who qualifies, and how a licensed electrician can help make the process smoother.

Important: Efficiency Maine programs and incentive amounts can change. Always review the current official requirements before purchasing equipment or signing a contract.

The available incentive depends on the type of project, your income category, and whether your heat pump system serves the entire home.

Whole-home heat pump rebates

For eligible whole-home heat pump upgrades completed during the 2026 bonus period, the base rebate and $500 bonus may total:

Household income category

Base whole-home rebate

With $500 bonus

Any income

Up to $3,000

Up to $3,500

Moderate income

Up to $6,000

Up to $6,500

Low income

Up to $9,000

Up to $9,500

Ductless mini-splits are generally included under the “other whole-home systems” category. Rebates are calculated per eligible outdoor unit and are subject to lifetime limits per housing unit.

The $500 whole-home heat pump bonus applies to qualifying projects completed, with claims emailed or postmarked, from March 1 through December 31, 2026.

EV charger rebates

The current Efficiency Maine off-peak charger incentive provides:

  • $200 instant discount when purchasing an eligible charger

  • $200 setup completion bonus after the charger is connected and activated

  • $400 total per charger

  • A limit of two chargers per residential or business address

The EV charger incentive is available to Maine customers regardless of household income, as long as the charger meets the program requirements.

How the $500 mini-split bonus works

A single mini-split installed in one room can improve comfort in that area. However, it may not qualify for the $500 whole-home bonus by itself.

To qualify as a whole-home heat pump system, the equipment must be designed to provide primary heating throughout the home. Depending on your layout, this may include:

  • Several single-zone ductless mini-splits

  • A ducted heat pump system

  • Indoor units covering bedrooms and common areas

  • Multiple outdoor units

  • Equipment sized for the home’s heating needs

Efficiency Maine’s current residential heat pump requirements list single-zone heat pumps as rebate eligible when they appear on the qualified product list. Multi-zone systems are not eligible under the standard residential heat pump rebate rules, although their heating capacity may still be considered when evaluating the home’s total heating capacity.

A qualified system must also be properly sized. Efficiency Maine requires qualifying heat pumps to provide at least 80% of the home’s peak heating load. When supplemental heat is included, the combined system must meet the program’s full heating requirement.

The existing oil, propane, or other primary heating system may be retained for emergency backup when program rules are followed. It cannot generally continue operating as the home’s regular primary heating source.

Who qualifies for the mini-split rebates?

Efficiency Maine’s residential heat pump program is intended for qualifying Maine homeowners and eligible residential properties.

General requirements include:

  • The property must be a single-family home, two-unit duplex, condominium, or eligible mixed-use building.

  • The home must not have had a natural gas utility account before the upgrade.

  • The heat pump must be used as the primary heating system throughout the heating season.

  • The equipment must appear on Efficiency Maine’s qualified product list.

  • The installation must be completed by an Efficiency Maine Residential Registered Vendor for heat pumps.

  • Low- and moderate-income applicants must meet the program’s income requirements.

  • Low- and moderate-income applicants generally must use the home as their principal residence.

  • Single-wide mobile homes may qualify for separate incentives, but they are not eligible for the $500 limited-time bonus.

The current income categories include:

  • Any income: Homeowners may receive up to $1,000 per eligible outdoor unit, subject to the $3,000 lifetime limit.

  • Moderate income: Eligible homeowners may receive up to $2,000 per outdoor unit, subject to the $6,000 lifetime limit.

  • Low income: Eligible homeowners may receive up to $3,000 per outdoor unit, subject to the $9,000 lifetime limit.

How to claim an Efficiency Maine mini-split rebate

The process is straightforward when you plan ahead.

1. Confirm your eligibility

Review your household income category, home type, heating plan, and existing fuel system. If you are unsure whether your project qualifies as whole-home, ask your installer before work begins.

2. Choose qualifying equipment

The proposed mini-split or heat pump should be listed as rebate eligible by Efficiency Maine. Your installer should also discuss sizing, cold-weather performance, and how many indoor and outdoor units your home needs.

3. Work with a registered heat pump vendor

Efficiency Maine requires qualifying residential heat pumps to be installed by a Residential Registered Vendor. Use the official Efficiency Maine vendor locator to confirm the contractor’s status.

4. Review the electrical requirements

A mini-split may need a dedicated 240-volt circuit, properly sized conductors, a disconnect, grounding and bonding, and appropriate outdoor protection. Your electrical service may also need a load calculation.

5. Complete the installation

Keep your contract, invoice, equipment information, model numbers, and installation records. These details can help prevent delays when you submit the claim.

6. Submit your claim on time

Complete the official Residential Heat Pump Rebate Claim Form. The claim must generally be emailed or postmarked within six months of project completion and within the 2026 bonus window.

Efficiency Maine states that incomplete information can delay or disqualify a rebate. Processing may take approximately six weeks.

How the $400 EV charger rebate works

The Efficiency Maine off-peak charger program is designed to help Maine drivers charge at home while reducing charging during the most expensive peak hours.

Eligible customers can request a discount code, purchase a qualifying off-peak Level 2 charger, and then receive the remaining setup bonus after activation.

The basic process is:

  1. Request an Efficiency Maine $200 off-peak charger discount code.

  2. Purchase an eligible charger through the approved shopping process.

  3. Have the charger installed at your Maine residence or business.

  4. Download the manufacturer’s mobile app.

  5. Connect the charger to the internet.

  6. Complete setup within six months of purchase.

  7. Receive the additional $200 setup completion bonus after activation is confirmed.

The charger must be shipped to and installed in Maine. The program is limited to two discounts per residential or business address.

Why work with a licensed electrician?

Efficiency Maine rebates are focused on equipment and program eligibility, but the electrical installation still needs to be safe, properly sized, and code compliant.

A licensed electrician can help you:

  • Determine whether your panel can support a mini-split or EV charger

  • Complete a load calculation

  • Install a dedicated circuit

  • Select the correct breaker and wire size

  • Install required GFCI protection

  • Confirm grounding and bonding

  • Coordinate permits and inspections

  • Identify whether a panel or service upgrade is needed

  • Plan for multiple large electrical loads

This is especially helpful if your home already has electric baseboard heat, a heat pump, electric water heating, an electric range, a hot tub, or another high-demand appliance.

A full panel upgrade is not always necessary. In some homes, the existing service has enough capacity. In others, a subpanel, load-management device, or service upgrade may be the better solution.

Plan your Maine rebate project early

If you are considering a mini-split or EV charger, start by gathering a few important details:

  • Your home’s current heating system

  • Your electrical panel size and available capacity

  • The number of rooms you want to heat or cool

  • Your vehicle’s charging requirements

  • Your household income category, if applying for enhanced heat pump rebates

  • The equipment model numbers

  • The installation and claim deadlines

The biggest mistake is purchasing equipment before confirming that it qualifies. Review the current Efficiency Maine requirements first, then coordinate with a qualified contractor and licensed electrician.

The bottom line

Efficiency Maine rebates can make 2026 a good time to improve your home’s comfort and efficiency.

A qualifying whole-home mini-split or heat pump project may receive a base rebate plus an additional $500 bonus, for possible totals of up to $3,500, $6,500, or $9,500, depending on income and system type.

A qualifying off-peak Level 2 EV charger may receive $400 total through the instant discount and setup completion bonus.

The key steps are simple:

  • Confirm eligibility before buying equipment.

  • Choose rebate-eligible products.

  • Work with the required registered heat pump vendor.

  • Have the electrical system reviewed by a licensed electrician.

  • Save your documents.

  • Submit the claim on time.
