The short answer is yes: major changes are coming! Starting July 1, 2026, the Maine Electricians’ Examining Board has officially adopted the 2026 NEC as the standard for all new electrical work. One of the most visible changes you will notice in 2026 is the requirement for an outdoor service disconnect. In previous years, the main "shut-off" for your power was often located inside your basement or garage at the main breaker panel.

Under the 2026 NEC (specifically Section 230.70), all one- and two-family dwellings must have a service disconnecting means located in a readily accessible outdoor location.

  • Emergency Access: In the event of a house fire or electrical emergency, first responders (like our brave Maine firefighters) need to be able to cut the power quickly and safely from the outside without entering a burning building.

2. Expanded GFCI Protection: Keeping Your HVAC Safe

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets have been around for decades: they are those outlets with the "Test" and "Reset" buttons you see in bathrooms and kitchens. Their job is to instantly cut power if they detect electricity flowing where it shouldn't (like through a person).

The 2026 NEC is expanding where these are required, and Maine has a very specific timeline you should know about.

The Maine HVAC "Grace Period"

Maine’s adoption of the code includes a specific amendment regarding HVAC equipment. Currently, there is an exception for GFCI protection on listed HVAC equipment, but this exception expires on September 1, 2026.

After that date, almost all outdoor HVAC units: including the popular mini-splits we install: will require GFCI protection if they are rated 50–60 Amps or less.

What this means for your renovation:

  • Kitchens & Baths: Expect GFCI protection on nearly every outlet in these areas, including those for specific fixed appliances.

  • Outdoor Outlets: All outdoor outlets of 60 Amps or less now require GFCI protection. This includes power for your patio, deck, and even your heating and cooling equipment.

  • Class C SPGFCI: The new code allows for special "Class C" protection for HVAC equipment, which helps prevent "nuisance tripping" while still keeping everything safe.

3. The New "24-Inch Rule" for Kitchen Countertops

Are you dreaming of a sleek, modern kitchen with a massive island and beautiful stone backsplashes? The 2026 NEC has introduced a new rule (Section 210.52) about where you can: and cannot: place your electrical outlets.

Previously, many homeowners liked to hide outlets low on the side of a cabinet or tucked way under the overhang of a countertop to keep the backsplash "clean." However, the new code specifies that receptacle outlets cannot be installed more than 24 inches below the top of a countertop or work surface.

The logic behind the change:

The goal is to prevent long appliance cords (like for your coffee maker or toaster) from draping down where a child could pull them, potentially tipping over a hot appliance.
